Spring Gardening Tips: How to Get Started
Spring is in full swing in North Texas, and it’s time to get your yard cleaned up. Many of our customers want a beautiful yard, but aren’t sure where to start, so Jacksons Home & Garden has a few spring gardening tips to get you started and ready for Spring entertaining:
Step 1: Clean Up and Clean Out.
The first step is definitely the least fun, but it’s a necessity: cleaning out the flower beds. Remove any leaves, dead plants, and weeds from each flower bed. As you pull the weeds, be sure to get down to the roots to ensure they do not grow back.
Step 2: Prepare the Soil.
Fall and winter weather can pack down the soil, and in North Texas, we deal with a lot of clay soil too. Help your plants thrive by churning up the soil, adding aeration, moisture, organic matter, and even manure as you go. You can even have your soil tested to remedy any nutrient deficiencies.
Step 3: Prune Everything Back.
Now that the soil is ready for new plants, it’s time to look at the shrubs, perennials, and other plants in your garden. This is a good time to prune back existing shrubs and shape other plants as they continue to grow for Spring. Be sure to get everything pruned back before flowering buds appear!
Step 4: Shop for New Plants.
Here’s the fun part! Once you’ve addressed your existing plants, look for any holes in the landscaping where new plants should be purchased – or seasonal flowers should be added. When shopping for flowers, consider purchasing perennials instead of annuals, as they will come back each year and give you more bang for your buck.
Step 5: Mulch Everything.
Once everything is planted, follow with a 3 inch layer of mulch to keep weeds down to a minimum, maintain the temperature of the soil below, and retain water in the soil. You might also consider putting down old newspaper before you mulch, as it works as natural weed barrier and breaks down and actually improves the quality of the soil over time.
