How to Safeguard Your Backyard from Mosquitos

Oh the summer nuisance.

Just as the day cools down and you long to spend some time outdoors grilling or watching the sunset, those pesky mosquitos roll in and ruin all the fun.

At Jacksons Home & Garden – the best home and garden store in Dallas, Texas – our goal is for you to enjoy your backyard, so here are a few tips on how to keep the mosquitos at bay:

1.    It’s in the Landscaping

A patio full of beautiful potted plants is charming and inviting, so why not incorporate a few mosquito-repelling varieties? A few that are known to repel mosquitos include citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, lavender, marigolds, basil, sage, and peppermint. The strong fragrances and essential oils in these plants deter mosquitos from coming around.

2.    Add Coffee Grounds

Studies have shown that coffee grounds are actually effective in deterring mosquito larvae from growing! Instead of throwing those grounds in the trash, sprinkle them in areas where mosquitos might want to lay eggs, including areas of standing water, piles of decaying leaves or debris, or thick shrubs.

3.    Upgrade Your Ambiance

Mood lighting is great for backyard cookouts, so be sure to add a few candles and lanterns that are tested to keep the mosquitos at bay. Again, mosquitos dislike the strong scents of essential oils, so candles with lemongrass, citronella, and spearmint work especially well to provide mosquito relief. You can also use mosquito repellant patio lanterns.

4.    Spray the Perimeter

Many experts believe that spraying the perimeter of your property with a mosquito treatment will kill off mosquitos and make your backyard a fun place to hang out again. You can buy treatments at your local home improvement store or hire a professional.

Hopefully these tips provide the mosquito relief you need to enjoy your outdoor living spaces this summer!
